A Resilient Community with a Storied History

The founders of Soul City, which sits on the site of a former slave plantation, successfully worked with the Nixon Administration to fund Soul City in 1973 as a “model city”. 

Floyd McKissick led the charge and envisioned a prosperous and diverse community. And indeed, Mr. McKissick and the other founders converted “Dreams Into Reality”, but there’s a lot more work to do to create this “model city”.

120 families made Soul City home in the 1970s and were key to establishing strong roots. Fortunately, current residents have access to some of the original founders who still reside in Soul City.
